NED Abstract

Copyright by Royal Astronomical Society. 1996MNRAS.278..273H The jets in 3C 66B M. J. Hardcastle, P. Alexander, G. G. Pooley and J. M. Riley Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cavendish Laboratory, Madingley Road, Cambridge CB3 0HE Accepted 1995 August 4. Received 1995 August 3; in original form 1994 May 24 ABSTRACT The nearby FRI radio source 3C 66B has been studied with the VLA at 1.5,8 and 15 GHz with high resolution and sensitivity. The first detailed maps of the counterjet are presented. Polarization maps in the jet and counterjet are shown; in each a resolved parallel-field region surrounds a central core which changes from a parallel to a perpendicular field configuration. A model of the jets involving a relativistic central region and a slower outer sheath is discussed, and in this context 3C 66B is compared with similar sources. Key words: galaxies: individual: 3C 66B - galaxies: jets - radio continuum: galaxies.
