   Figure 1. (c) 6-cm map of the nucleus of Mkn 348, with a core component
 subtracted from the map centre as described in the text. The angular
 resolution is 0.07arcsec, and the contour levels are at -20, 20, 40, 60 and 80
 per cent of the peak brightness which is 21.6 mJy per beam. The bold circle in
 the centre of the map shows the region within which contours have not been
 plotted, as they are strongly affected by errors in the subtraction process.
 The crosses labelled 1, 2 and 3 show the positions and half-power sizes of the
 VLBI components measured by Neff & de Bruyn (1983).
