1. INTRODUCTION

The subject of our paper is the extragalactic far ultraviolet background radiation. We start, therefore, by describing the observations at high galactic latitudes; and we also start by simply assuming that the observed signals are extragalactic in origin. Having explored various possible origins, in relation to the observations, we then consider the observations at lower galactic latitudes; at this point we examine carefully whether the high-latitude observations themselves might be galactic in origin, rather than extragalactic. Finally, we summarize our conclusions.
