5.8 NGC 185

A distant companion of M31, NGC 185 is quite similar to NGC 205 in almost all respects. Though a little less luminous, it has all of the composite qualities that made NGC 205 so puzzling for so long: a basic elliptical galaxy content of very old stars, plus some O and B stars and dust clouds (13, 60), and a small amount of HI (80). Its star formation history probably looks something like Figure 12.
