Introduction

ISOLWS (LWS) was the long-wavelength spectrometer on-board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The LWS covered a wavelenth range of 43-197um, consisting of ten detectors with spectral overlap for adjacent detectors. The LWS had four observing modes. The first two modes, L01 and L02, were medium-resolution grating modes (R~200) with spectral resolution of 0.29um for the 10um-wide short wavelength detectors (SW1-SW5) and 0.60um for the 20um-wide long wavelength detectors (LW1-LW5). The L01 AOT is typically a full scan of the grating, resulting in a complete spectrum over the LWS range. The L02 AOT samples line spectra for up to 10 wavelengths. In this mode, data are recorded on all detectors while the lines are being scanned. This results in sparsely sampled spectra over the LWS range. The second two modes, L03 and L04, were high-resolution Fabry-Perot modes (R~8000). The L03 AOT was a high resolution spectrum covering a wavelength range (up to the full range of the LWS). The L04 AOT produces high resolution spectra around up to 10 wavelengths, but unlike the L02 mode, useful data is only recorded from one detector at a time. LWS data were also taken in an L02 photometric mode AOT where the grating is not scanned, producing an SED with 10 points, one per detector. The LWS also operated in parallel and serendipity modes. Sample Selection

This sample represents all guaranteed and open time LWS (Clegg et al. 1996) observations of 228 galaxies (465 TDTs) taken in grating mode L01 or L02 AOTs. Photometric mode L02 AOTs have been excluded from this sample. This sample consists of galaxies with a range of temperatures, luminosities, and morphologies. A source list of galaxies was constructed by querying the IRAS Catalog of Galaxies and Quasars (CGQ) for sources with 60/100um ratios between 0.1 and 1.5, a typical IRAS color ratio for galaxies. A second source list was made by querying the IRAS CGQ for galaxies with 60um fluxes between 1-1000 Jy. A third source list was done by querying the IRAS CGQ for galaxies with 100um fluxes between 1-1000 Jy. By combining these three source lists and using only sources classified as galaxies by NED, a final source list of over 11,000 sources was made. From this source list, ~218 galaxies were observed with the LWS in grating mode. Later, LWS grating observations for a few sources were discovered with no IRAS 60um or 100um detections or detections < 1 Jy. These ~10 galaxies were then added.

This likely represents over 95% of the observations taken of galaxies (non-QSO objects as classified by NED) with the LWS. This sample represents ~25% of all grating L01 and L02, ~15% of all LWS, and ~2% of all ISO pointed observations. It is difficult to say exactly how many observations of galaxies were done with the LWS from querying the archive alone, but a sample of LWS galaxy observations as complete as possible has been made. The galaxies M31 and the LMC and SMC are excluded from this sample although LWS observations exist for these galaxies.

The table below lists the properties of the galaxies in this sample. Click on the galaxy name to get a more detailed description of each observation and an index of all LWS grating observations for this galaxy, including "snapshots" of the data, DSS and IRAS 60um images with LWS apertures overlaid, and links to FITS and ASCII files of the data.


Data Reduction

All data were extracted from the ISO Data Archive and processed through the LWS Pipeline Version (OLP) 7.0 or higher. The data were then processed through the LWS Interactive Analysis(LIA; Hutchinson, M.G. et al. 2001). Using LIA, the dark currents were re-estimated and subtracted. The absolute responsivity (gain) corrections were redone and the data were flux calibrated to the LWS calibration source Uranus using LIA. Glitches that were visible and still present in the data were then removed using the ISO Specral Analaysis Package (ISAP; Sturm et al. 1998) by plotting spectral scans and identifying bad data points. The data were then averaged with a 3-sigma clip in bins of about 0.05um. For L01 AOTs, a sinusoidal fringe associated with the instrument was removed.
