The observed distribution of galaxies is characterized by numerous authors (from W. Herschel in 1811 onwards) as gradients, clustering, clusters, superclusters, voids, bubbles, arrangements in chains, filaments, sheets, and others. A brief history of some of these concepts is given in the following.
