5.10 NGC 147

This close companion of NGC 185 is apparently a ``pure'' elliptical galaxy. It contains no detected young stars, no dust, and no gas. The brightest stars are red giants (12), and there are large numbers of RR Lyrae stars (106). It appears to have had a burst of star formation about 15 Gyr ago and to have been quiescent ever since.
