2. PRIMARY OBSERVATIONS

Much of our understanding of AGNs is due to their emission lines. There are three types of primary observations, and three corresponding ways of analysis, that can be used. They are related to the line intensities, the line variability and the line profiles. Another experimental result relates the gas distribution, and optical depth, to the observed ultraviolet continuum. The observations are described in this chapter; the analysis and the theory in chapters 3-9.
