Stellar evolution theory provides a number of predictions, based on relatively well understood physics, of features expected in CMDs for different age and metallicity stellar populations (see Figure 1). There are a number of clear indicators of varying sfrs at different times which can be combined to obtain a very accurate picture of the entire SFH of a galaxy.
