How can I change the scale of a skyplot?

DSS images of some galaxies near the celestial poles are rotated with respect to 2MASS images. Which image is correct?

How can I acknowledge NED if it has been useful in my research?

  • Q.: How can I change the scale of a skyplot?

A.: The default skyplot scale is that of the POSS and SERC/ESO Sky Surveys. To change that, click the "No" radio button, then enter you desired scale in arcsec/mm in the box. A convenient scale in arcsec/mm for viewing plots on your screen is the search radius in arcminutes that you used for your object search. The allowed range is 0.1 to 130 arcsec/mm.
  • Q.: DSS images of some galaxies near the celestial poles are rotated with respect to 2MASS images. Which image is correct?

A.: The 2MASS images are correctly oriented. The direction of north on the DSS images is dependent on several factors, including their position on the original 6.4 x 6.4-degree sky survey plate, the epoch of the original plate, and the software used for scanning and image extraction. The 2MASS images come directly from the sky at an epoch very close 2000.0, so were processed with equinox J2000.0 coordinates.

  • Q.: How can I acknowledge NED if it has been useful in my research?

If your research benefits from the use of NED, we would appreciate the following acknowledgement in your paper:

This research has made use of the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED), which is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

When citing NED within a paper, you may insert the following statement as a footnote:

The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

We would also appreciate receiving a preprint or reprint of any publication acknowledging NED. Please send them to
