While there are many different probability distributions, a large number of problems in physics are described or can be approximately described by a surprisingly small group of theoretical distributions. Three, in particular, the binomial, Poisson and Gaussian distributions find a remarkably large domain of application. Our aim in this section is to briefly survey these distributions and describe some of their mathematical properties.
