5.1 Images
We now compare the measured size, surface brightness and photometry for the 100 largest galaxies. Grey-scale depictions of the mosaiced galaxy images are given in Figures 1-5, presented in order of the isophotal radius, r20 (see Table 1). Here we have combined the three bands into a "super" mosaic to enhance the low surface brightness features. The appendix describes the special grey-scale stretch used. Larger, higher resolution versions of these images, including individual JHKs bands, 3-color combinations, and Milky Way objects (e.g., "47 Tuc" NGC104) can be found in NED and in IRSA. Below we highlight NGC 253 to illustrate the full resolving power of the 2MASS mosaics.
