| Abstract | Within the field of the source 0957 + 561 is a close pair of blue stellar objects of magnitude 17 with a separation of 5.7 arc sec at redshift 1.405. The two sources show great similarity in their spectral characteristics. A conventional interpretation could regard as coincidence the similarity of emission spectra, or assume that the initial conditions, age and environment of the two quasars are practically identical. A less conventional view would find the quasars to be two images of the same object produced by a gravitational lens. |
